Where is Stax?

Walking towards the Stax Museum located on 926 E McLemore Ave on a radiant sunny afternoon was a moment filled with anticipation and excitement. As I arrived near the entrance, a sign caught my eye! It was proudly displaying the rich musical legacy of Soulsville, USA – a testament to the soulful sound that originated within these very walls.‍‍

Soul

Stepping inside, the museum welcomed me with a detailed timeline of soul music. I was instantly drawn to the displays showcasing Soul music and the humble roots that sprouted in the spiritual soil of the church. The informative text accompanying each display painted a vivid picture of how the term “soul” was first applied to music in the 1950s. It explained how, from these beginnings, the music genre began to grow, evolve and flourish through the 1960s and '70s.

Roots

Continuing my journey through the museum, I encountered more exhibits explaining how the civil rights movement was deeply intertwined with the black church. The role of the church as a gathering place for the exchange of revolutionary ideas was clearly highlighted. This exchange, as the exhibit eloquently illustrated, ignited a spark that fueled positive societal changes, engaging more and more people in the process.

Another striking exhibit showcased historic recording machines. Their classic retro design and preservation offered a glimpse into the technological backbone of the music produced during the era. The old electronic equipment, stood as a testament to the technological innovations of the past.

Next, I found myself at a dance floor, a perfect spot to physically express the rhythms and grooves that shake the soul to it's core. Alongside this, encased in glass, were historic records that have withstood the test of time. I was particularly drawn to Sam & Dave's soul-stirring ballad, “When Something is Wrong With My Baby”.

Continuing on, I stumbled upon an exhibit celebrating Stax Records as a Cultural Oasis. A poignant quote from Co-Founder Jim Stewart stood out, “That's a real part of what Stax was all about. We were sitting in the middle of a highly segregated city. We were in another world when we walked into that studio.” This statement resonated deeply, reflecting the power of music during a cultural change. Further into the museum, I found a fascinating demo tape, possibly dating back to the 70s. The tape, with inscriptions that hinted at its historical context, was a tangible piece of the past.

‍

Conclusion

An unexpected highlight was a live performance by musicians within the museum, breathing life into the timeless tracks of Stax Records.

Overall, my visit to the Stax Museum was nothing short of amazing. Each step revealed another layer of history and music. The influence of Stax Records and the soul music it championed is deeply embedded in the fabric of Memphis and the South. Especially during the civil rights movement. Over time, this influence expanded, reaching major cities like Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and locations out West. It was an immersive journey, rekindling the enduring spirit of soul music and the vibrant legacy it holds.
